** Please note the Guide Light MT Frame has different sizing than previous Mystery Ranch packs. Many people who used to be a large will now fit a medium pack. Please check the sizing tab to ensure you order the correct size.
BreakdownThe new 2020 version of the Metcalf takes the previous best-selling Mystery Ranch pack and adds some very functional features making the bag better than it ever was before. First and foremost the Metcalf is now on the Guide Light MT Frame which offers an improved waist belt and a slightly lighter frame. The Guide Light MT Frame also makes the Overload shelf easier to access. The bag itself has also undergone a couple of minor changes to increase functionality. One of these changes is that the full-length side zipper now runs outside of the side pocket making it easier to access gear at the very bottom of your pack. The other change is that now the Metcalf has two open-topped side pockets rather than just one. This is a great improvement because it allows you to carry your rifle or tripod on either side of your pack. The 2020 Metcalf is still the all-around workhorse that its predecessor was and is guaranteed to be a favorite among hunters looking for versatility and all-around utility.
*If you are in-between sizes we recommend that you size down. This will ensure that you have the ability to tighten the waist belt under a heavy load and or after having spent multiple days in the backcountry and having lost a few pounds.

I ran this pack all year this year starting with August bears all the way through rifle deer. The pack is lightweight, and it carries weight well. I was easily able to get 4-5 days worth of gear in it for overnight elk hunting trips. I packed out an elk and 2 deer this year and loaded this pack down. The load rode well, and I was able to strap large loads to the meat shelf.
**The only negative thing I have to say about this pack is that the access into the main bag is not ideal. You have to either un-buckle multiple straps on the top draw bag or unbuckle 2 side straps for the side access.**
Overall, a great pack and much more reasonably priced than some of the other popular packs on the market.
i packed out two deer and one elk, easy to use and fits well
I like the pack so far. I wish it had a bit more smaller storage sections. Also the material seems kinda noisy. Maybe over time it will loosen up. It can haul a ton of meat though.
Mystery Ranch Metcalf Backpack
I've always been a Badlands pack fan, but bought the Metcalf after my buddy bought it and I read some reviews. Just went on a cow elk hunt last week...WOW! Packed out 2 bone-in shoulders and boy was it awesome. Yes it was heavy, but the pack held the load very tight and the padding on the shoulder straps and waist belt were surprisingly comfortable. If there was a weakness in the whole process it was me, not the pack. It stood up to anything I did. Highly recommend this pack, especially to those who want to carry a heavy load!
