** Please note the Guide Light MT Frame has different sizing than previous Mystery Ranch packs. Many people who used to be a large will now fit a medium pack. Please check the sizing tab to ensure you order the correct size.
BreakdownThe new 2020 version of the Metcalf takes the previous best-selling Mystery Ranch pack and adds some very functional features making the bag better than it ever was before. First and foremost the Metcalf is now on the Guide Light MT Frame which offers an improved waist belt and a slightly lighter frame. The Guide Light MT Frame also makes the Overload shelf easier to access. The bag itself has also undergone a couple of minor changes to increase functionality. One of these changes is that the full-length side zipper now runs outside of the side pocket making it easier to access gear at the very bottom of your pack. The other change is that now the Metcalf has two open-topped side pockets rather than just one. This is a great improvement because it allows you to carry your rifle or tripod on either side of your pack. The 2020 Metcalf is still the all-around workhorse that its predecessor was and is guaranteed to be a favorite among hunters looking for versatility and all-around utility.
*If you are in-between sizes we recommend that you size down. This will ensure that you have the ability to tighten the waist belt under a heavy load and or after having spent multiple days in the backcountry and having lost a few pounds.

To be fair this is the first pack I've owned of this size, but it blew away all my expectations. I purchased this for a WY mule deer hunt and used it to train prior to the trip itself. A 40lb bag of salt fits perfectly on the load shelf and when cinched down it feels like an extension of my body, not like an overloaded grade school backpack. After getting my deer last year, I loaded the whole quartered-out deer into the load shelf and packed it out in one trip. I was impressed and now I'm a mystery ranch customer for life. This year my friend was looking for a multi-day pack and I told him to get the Metcalf and stop worrying about it. He hasn't used his yet, but I know he will be a fan. I'll say the same to you, don't bother reading any more reviews and wondering what to get, just buy the Metcalf (they usually go on sale on gohunt for memorial day) and start focusing on training or your next big purchase. Ps- I also bought 2 large forager pockets and they're nice for having small items within reach and not having to use pant/jacket pockets. My Pixel 5 doesn't easily fit though, I have to awkwardly jam it in the pocket. However, I would buy them again to pair with the pack and expand its small item storage. Thanks for your time and good luck this year!
Mystery Ranch Metcalf Backpack
Hike with 50lb sand bag for preseason hikes. Carries the weight very very well. Very easy to size and get comfortable. Very stout product. Use MR wildland packs and MR does not disappoint with hunting packs. Same exceptional quality and comfort that I've come to expect.
Took it out this weekend with all my gear (40 pounds) and hiked around the foot hills. Worked awesome.
