Game calls and decoys help hunters communicate with and attract animals by mimicking their sounds, appearance, or behavior. Elk calls, turkey calls, and deer rattles can provoke a response from nearby game, helping you locate or draw animals into shooting range. Decoys provide a visual cue to complete the illusion, increasing your odds of a close encounter. Used correctly, they’re powerful tools for creating more opportunities in the field.
Elk calls fall into three main types: diaphragm (mouth) calls, bugle tubes, and external reed calls. Diaphragm calls are versatile and allow for cow sounds and bugles, but they take practice to master. Bugle tubes amplify bugles and are often used in combination with mouth calls. External reed calls are easier for beginners and still offer great cow and calf vocalizations. Practice with each type to find what works best for your style and confidence level.
Cow calls are great for calming herds, drawing in curious bulls, or creating realistic herd chatter. Bugles, especially challenge or location bugles, are used to provoke a response from dominant bulls and locate elk over long distances. Early in the season, cow calls are often more effective, while bugles become more dominant during peak rut when bulls are actively competing.
While not always necessary, decoys can significantly improve your setup, especially for turkey and elk hunting. A well-placed decoy grabs an animal’s attention and helps convince them the sounds they hear are real. Elk decoys work best in open areas or when calling solo, while turkey decoys help direct the approach of gobblers and hold their focus for a cleaner shot opportunity.
Keep calls dry and clean after each hunt. Diaphragm calls should be rinsed with fresh water and stored in ventilated containers to prevent mold. Bugle tubes and external calls should be wiped down and checked for reed wear. Decoys should be folded or stored in their original bags, kept out of extreme heat, and free from scent contamination for best effectiveness in the field.
